MISSION STATEMENT

Over the coming year we are looking to take the Mike James Rock Show to the next level, Our aim is to build on our already strong brand and progress further with what we cover, Be that band/artist interviews, Promoting new music, Helping up and coming acts understanding how the industry has evolved and works to launching new products to cover areas of the business we haven't before.

We want to encourage the growing following we have to take on our mantra of "community not competition" to a new level, We want to educate new aspiring artists and die hard fans as to the reality of the Music Industry in the present climate so that we all can work together to help better promote the artists and events.

We're kicking off with an evolution of our own brand launching in early October 2017 which includes a total overhaul of our social media with scheduled content  a clear focus on our main platforms of Radio, Podcasting and Visual Presenting.

The radio show will still remain as our main platform for promoting new music alongside the traditional interviews, competitions and interactive banter.

The MJRS Podcast is looking to branch out into industry education for signed and unsigned bands alongside its current format of band interviews and presenter antidotes with a future approach being on the people within the industry giving advice and their stories.

We are currently working towards releasing a new Youtube product called Danncast, More in the vein of a YouTuber experience with a focus on “Behind the Scenes” of Gigs, Mental Health within the industry (which is close to both our hearts) and previously unreleased footage from the MJRS archive alongside pushing new releases.

We are also in the process of booking and running our own live music events to support up and coming touring acts alongside giving aspiring local acts the opportunity to get involved with these events to help elevate them in a live environment as well as the continuation of our regular parties/DJ club nights.

HISTORY

The Mike James Rock Show was established in the early months of 2008 on Exeter based community radio station Phonic FM. Founding members Mike James, Daniel Beck & John Marshal would cover all genres from Rock, Metal, Ska, Punk and all things in between building up a local following with their permanent Friday night slot.

Over the course of that year interviews were booked with some of the big name acts to visit the city and the show quickly picked up notoriety for being able to gain interviews with acts other local station wouldn’t touch and wouldn’t cover. Over the course of the next 18 months the show grew and started to draw on Mike James’ experience in event promotion to put on their own live show’s supporting the local scene by adding local acts to the bill with bigger touring bands. As 2009 drew to an end both Dan & John could not commit to the show due to personal circumstances, so Mike James took the helm alone.

In 2010 as the show grew, Mike’s policy of supporting the scene seen saw more local/regional acts join him in the studio for interviews, as well as seeing Mike attend a number of national festival and gigs, to interview the acts playing. Mike arranged regular club nights in Exeter and started to promote tribute acts as well as giving local bands the chance to play live as support. 2010 was also the year of the first Halloween Zombie Ball at the Black Horse in Exeter and was broadcast live on Phonic FM.

By 2011 Mike’s show had grown and was now attracting interest with bigger PR & Press agencies which saw Mike and cohort Dann travelling the country to interview a much bigger calibre of acts, as well as seeing Mike cover a great number of festivals. With regular and popular club nights in Exeter, Mike was able to team up to companies to arrange album launch parties and ticket giveaway nights. After a successful summer of interviews at festivals and networking, national station TotalRock asked the show to syndicate to their station and Mike gladly jumped at the opportunity. Towards the end of the year Mike found out he had been nominated for FM DJ of 2011 at the South West Music Awards. Mike attended the awards ceremony to present the award for best Metal Act and he also picked up the only publicly voted award of the night making him the FM DJ of 2011.

In early 2012 Mike’s now award winning show took up a 6 month residency on web based station Firebrand Rock Radio taking the tally of stations to three. Another summer of festivals attracted more interviews with national and international acts including headliners. After the summer Mike signed the show to be syndicated to another of the UK’s top 5 rock radio stations Planetmosh who gave the show a prime time slot on Saturday evenings. Towards the end of the year it was becoming apparent that extra help was needed for the live broadcasts, as well as in the background, and so long time friend Dann took on the roll.

At the start of 2013 the Mike James Rock Show won the converted DJ of the Year 2013 at the Pure Rawk Awards. This award drew lots of attention to the show and soon signed with Orlando based station Sick World Radio who would carry the show on their network and push it throughout the east coast of America. Dann soon took on the persona of Devon Dann and became a co-presenter with his ability in visual editing meaning that all interviews could be filmed along with the acts that came into the studio nearly every week and subsequently the YouTube channel was launched. With the two of them attending a multitude of festivals and events it meant that a lot more could be covered, the show in fact became the quickest releasing media outlet at UK festivals.. After the busiest summer to date the show was picked up by yet another station in the USA, Metal Devastation based in Nashville who gave the show their Saturday night drive time slot. 2013 also saw the Halloween Zombie Ball grow to another sell out event at Exeter Phoenix, this time boasting four stages including an outdoor stage as part of the accompanying Zombie Walk through the city centre which was attended by over 750 zombie dressed people.

At the start of 2014 the show announced that the Halloween Zombie Ball would be moving to the much bigger venue, The Lemongrove at Exeter University, which would then sell out on Friday 31st October after another successful Zombie Walk through Exeter's city centre, alongside this the show also let people know that it would be hosting the second stage at the annual Respect Festival which drew more than 23,000 people a day. The stage played host to an assortment of Devon based Rock, Metal, Indie and Alternative acts some being hand picked by the team and others winning their place from a Battle Of The Bands.  In the latter part of the year the boys relaunched mikejamesrockshow.com and the shows social media to accompany the growing YouTube channel as the show had maintained being the quickest releasing media outlet at all the festivals the show attended that year.

2015 saw the show get picked up by U.S online station Stone Chrome Radio giving the show a new dynamic gain listeners globally. The same year saw The Mike James Rock Show put on their biggest shows with them promoting Europe, Evil Scarecrow and Heart Of A Coward to name a few. This year saw the team covering over a dozen festivals from March to November and interviewing over 250 acts throughout the entire year. Dann rebranded and updated the website due to growing demand which then led to an evolution of the brand on YouTube and social media, including social media takeovers and an interactive presence on line during the show and festivals.

2016 started with the launch of a whole new show in the form of The MJRS Podcast which started off as a way of getting old interviews out of the archive mixed with spoken word antidote from Mike. It quickly evolved to a show supplement as the guys attended more events and festivals with the calibre of acts they interview being the strongest to date. The guys agreed to take some time out from promotional work of live events to concentrate on the radio show. Half way through the year they teamed up with U.S network Rock Rage Radio giving the Saturday morning breakfast slot to the show. This year also saw the start of "Community Not Competition" being promoted by the show within interviews and social media campaigns from the very first festival of the year.

2017 started with a viral video Dann made hitting 1 Million views and Mike being ask to be a Judge of the Heavy Music Awards, from there the show has supported events in both the UK and America throughout the year, being invited to support an international act on their only UK tour date, branching out in interviews to cover subjects like mental health and surviving financially in the current industry, and with Mike thundering out an impressive interview schedule and Dann balancing interviews and post production, the show is still the quickest releasing media outlet at UK festivals. Now at the end of festival season, the show has gone through a full re brand and has taken up residence on the U.Ks leading online station Hard Rock Hell Radio.
